AfAA and CIArb Kenya to Host Takuka 2026: "Africa Decides" Conference on Sovereignty, Innovation and the Future of Dispute Resolution

The African Arbitration Association (AfAA) and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Kenya Branch (CIArb Kenya) will jointly host the Takuka Conference 2026 at Diamond Leisure Lodge, Diani, Kenya, from 5–9 October 2026. Themed "Africa Decides: Sovereignty, Innovation and the Future of Dispute Resolution," the five-day event brings together judges, arbitrators, government representatives, and young practitioners to confront pressing issues shaping African dispute resolution — from the "seat problem" and investor-state arbitration reform to AI governance, third-party funding, ESG disputes, and the constitutional promise of Alternative Justice Systems under Kenya's Article 159.
 

The programme opens on Monday with a pre-conference day featuring AfAA/SOAS training and an inaugural Young AfAA x CIArb Kenya conference for practitioners under 40. Tuesday through Thursday form the main joint programme, built around a narrative arc — Prologue, Diagnosis, Tools, Consensus — culminating in the adoption of a Conference Declaration. A signature highlight is a rare fireside conversation among three sitting or retired Chief Justices on the judiciary's role in arbitration. The week closes Friday with two concurrent CIArb Kenya streams on construction adjudication and Kenya's constitutional access-to-justice framework.
